Annual Spring Luncheon with featured food
and home expert, Carol McGarvey
11:30 a.m. at Hyperion Field Club
Carol, a freelance writer and editor, spent
33 years with the Des Moines Register, first
as a copy editor and then as a features
reporter writing about food and home issues.
She served as a food judge at the Iowa State
Fair for 19 years, taught journalism at
Drake University for five years, co-authored
a number of cookbooks, and wrote a
syndicated column that ran for six years.
One of her colleagues, noting the
relationship this widely recognized
journalist built with her audience, reported
that McGarvey often received calls at home
from people who had questions about food
preparation. One Thanksgiving morning when a
reader called to ask how much cornstarch to
use to make gravy, McGarvey went to her
cupboard and literally read the directions
from her box of cornstarch to the reader.
